Zencart
We use Zencart. We used it because our then web developer thought it was a good idea..... We've since learnt a lot and probably in retorspect would have used something more up to date with more contemporary code. However, we re-vamped our main website last year bringing in a lot more web 2.0 functionality and took the decision to stay with Zen. We commissioned getting the design improved to look more like our main site, and added in lots of new modules like referrals, cross selling and advanced shipping.
Its been clunky and occasionally falls down but we have found a great specialist developer who's based in Ireland. He specialises in Zencart and can do pretty much all we need.
Its a fairly simple to run system and I, as a non developer, can do all the day-to-day running of the store without help.
Paypal and other merchant services are all fine. It doesn't like Google checkouts though.
I was chatting to the MD of purashop the other day (they sell all the Delirious CDs and related stuff so have a big turnover going through). They use a similar system to us which they had created. That falls down from time to time too (and the order I made in it never arrived - I didn't get charged either - but just an example of a cart letting a store down). They researched it well, didn't have a huge budget but did spend wisely. And they still get problems.
My recommendations - do a lot of research and get good advice from specialists who really know the difference between a great cart and an updated but troubled older system. And remember that a cart that functions ok with a few sales doesn't always work well when you suddenly find your customer base increases.
