I'd be interested to hear if anybody here produces or uses production music.

It seems to me that there are a few new companies offering it at significantly lower prices in a strategy modeled after the online stock photography business.

I'm interested because I produce production music.

I'm referring to the non-jingle music on TV commercials, music playing beneath web animations, under spoken Public Service Announcements, etc.

Actually, you can probably hear the kind of music I'm referring to quite often on TV, radio and more and more on the net.

Music is really saturated over the web. I guess those music you produce can make money over music that has been shared all over the web. Nothing is bad in trying to sell it online.

In the case of production music licensed legally, no laws are being broken and it's quite possible to find very affordable deals for use.

Some production music sites have different levels of use, so if you were licensing music for a presentation for your company at a conference, the cost would be less than if you were putting the music into a film for theatrical release. In the latter case, the composer could make more money from performance rights organization, assuming the film played in the proper venues or was aired on the proper TV channel and the film cue sheets had been filed by the production company.

The first two sites marketing production music that I've had sales with are:

Productiontrax.com and Audiosparx.com

You can hear examples of it there, and you'll learn more about its uses from the info on those sites.

If you start to make some, it will probably be an ongoing pursuit to get it on as many sites as you can, providing they meet your expectations.

One point I feel strongly about is that the above sites log your Performance Rights Organization data, meaning if cue sheets are filed and the project with your music is used in a way covered by the PRO agreement, then you could receive additional money. So far I haven't experienced that, but I'm hopeful.
